Creativity and perception can be considered an integral part of spiritual development.

Though, there are thought processes, which enhance the Arts and Aesthetics in our country, facilities necessary for enhancing creativity are sadly lacking. This is common to all Arts in Sri Lanka. For example, the hosts of technology shortcomings are responsible for the dearth of mega cinematic creations emanating in our country. Yet, we are the proud heirs to a level of performing arts coming down from a long period of time which can overcome these short comings. Some of these have a long history, going back to a period surpassing other civilizations the world over. It is a felt need of hour to modernize, what we have inherited, to suit the present century.

Facilities in our halls, where dramas can be staged today are poor. The theatres available, even in the main towns, of our island, are over fifty years old and have little in the way desired facilities,. In spite of these short comings our audiences are privy to productions of very high quality.

In order to develop a contemporary tradition it should be our task to indulge in research and the development of new creations, rather than protect and replicate our traditional system per se. This theatre of performing arts can be envisaged as a place where skills, fresh ideas are blended to form a truly Sri Lankan mega tradition.

While this stage and facilities will give new value to our performing arts it will provide an opportunity for our artistes to take their creations to the international arena.

Further, we have not been able to get down to Sri Lanka any of the great operas produced internationally. When Khemadasa produced an opera on an unfamiliar stage, it appeared to be foreign to us, because we had no idea of operas, as we had not come into contact with them earlier

The absence of suitable facilities may have been the reason for Khemadasa’s inability to storm this gigantic production on to the international stage. It may have been the absence of a stage of this magnitude that unfortunately prevented us from getting the full effects of this maestro’s production.

This is not just another construction of the Chinese Government. The possibilities to make use of the latest creative sound techniques have come along with it. The present generation will have the privilege of using the varied facilities that were not available to the giants of yester years, such as Sarachchandra and Khemadasa. Therefore, we can hope to witness quality productions in the future.

This theatre will also give a fillip to drama as a component of school education. A new generation of artistes will be born. It will be possible through this addition, to hope for a new dialogue, a new introduction as an alternative to the poor values, the lack of progressive ideas, and poverty in quality that are the order of the day and that these would be replaced by a fresh dialogue that would bring fresh values, progressive ideas, steeped in quality. Many facilities such as a modern stage, needed by performing Thespians are included in this theatre. This would result not only in a new awakening but also in advanced technological knowledge of performing arts and their use and also much needed discipline, the technological advances in stage dramas, are emerging as a vehicle bringing in new ideas to the fore. As such a dialogue will be created whereby recognition of indisciplined and vulgar productions will be recognized and rejected.

We are much obliged and grateful to the Government of China for providing us with a theatre of this nature.

Great honour is also due to our President His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, who insists not only on the physical development but also the spiritual development of the nation and made this dream of a modern theatre a reality.

<img style="cursor:pointer; But instead of waiting around for the automatic update of your profile from the old to the new – Timeline profile, it would be a good idea to activate the new Timeline now.

Here’s what mine look like:

Although you won’t get to see it on my profile just yet!

Why should I activate my facebook profile to the new Timeline? I already hate it!

Well, whether you and I love it or hate it, Facebook is going to activate it this week. When you activate the new timeline, Facebook says:

Welcome to Your Timeline – Developer Release
Your timeline currently features your top photos and posts. Right now, only you can see what’s here. Take a tour and star, hide or add whatever you want. Then click Publish Now or wait until your timeline goes live on Thursday, September 29, 2011.

So, unless you are planning on abandoning Facebook and deleting your profile altogether or something, my humble opinion is that you should activate the new Timeline now! So that you can check on what’s visible and what’s private and be comfortable with your profile before Facebook activates it on the 29th.

When I activated mine, I realized that anyone can go right to the beginning of my days on Facebook and easily check on anything that’s posted public. The thing is, when we just started using Facebook (Going down the Timeline, I found out that I joined in June 2007, well fancy that!) I don’t think many of us were aware of the privacy settings. Nor did we have a lot of friends and probably didn’t see ourselves ‘friending’ our bosses and colleagues and aunty Netta either. So it’s quite likely that we may have posted status updates, photos, comments that we might not like everyone on Facebook or at least ALL our current friends to view. THIS is why you should take a trip down Facebook Timeline memory lane and check out all your posts as much in detail as you can (that means including your comments on other people’s posts and their comments on your posts) and edit privacy settings to limited or “just you” or even delete them altogether.

As a rule of thumb, you should look at a post and think, Is it okay if my mom, my boss, my haters, my partner/spouse seeing this? If it’s cool, then leave it. Otherwise, change visibility settings or just delete it. It would save you loads of trouble and headache and even heartache later on. Trust me!

How do I activate the new Facebook Timeline?

So having said that, here’s how you can activate your new Timeline without waiting for the official unveiling. There are some pretty good post out there. I followed the one on TechCrunch but there are so many out there like the one on Mashable.

But one of the easiest ways to do it is actually watching how its been done. Abeywickrema said.
Speaking to the News Now.lk, Dr. Abeywickrema said that additional information on the radiation check can be available on the Authority’s hotline number – 0112547332 – and anyone who wishes to conduct the test can visit the Authority.

However Dr. Abeywickrema said that the radiation check was not compulsory and only those who were interested could get it done.

After days of seesawing between hope and fear, between a triumphant vindication of nuclear safety and a disastrous loss of confidence in the atom, events at the stricken Fukushima nuclear reactors seem to have taken an alarming turn for the worse, as the Foreign Office advises Britons to consider leaving Tokyo and north-eastern Japan, the foreign media reported.

According to reports Yukiya Amano, the Japanese head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has abandoned his largely reassuring stance to say the situation is “very serious”. Gregory Jaczko, the Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which has been assisting the Japanese authorities, said that radiation levels are “extremely high”. And the EU’s energy commissioner, Guenther Oettinger, said: “We are somewhere between a disaster and a major disaster.” He added: “There is talk of an apocalypse and I think the word is particularly well chosen.”

(Report by Jamila Najmuddin for News Now.lk)
Sajith Consumer Reports' engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4.

<span style=";font-family:";" >We reached this conclusion after testing all three of our iPhone 4s (purchased at three separate retailers in the New York area) in the controlled environment of CU's radio frequency (RF) isolation chamber. In this room, which is impervious to outside radio signals, our test engineers connected the phones to our base-station emulator, a device that simulates carrier cell towers (see video: IPhone 4 Design Defect Confirmed). We also tested several other AT&T phones the same way, including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre. None of those phones had the signal-loss problems of the iPhone 4.

<span style=";font-family:";" >Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4's signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software that "mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength."

<span style=";font-family:";" >The tests also indicate that AT&T's network might not be the primary suspect in the iPhone 4's much-reported signal woes..

<span style=";font-family:";" >We did, however, find an affordable solution for suffering iPhone 4 users: Cover the antenna gap with a piece of duct tape or another thick, non-conductive material. It may not be pretty, but it works. We also expect that using a case would remedy the problem. We'll test a few cases this week and report back.

<span style=";font-family:";" >The signal problem is the reason that we did not cite the iPhone 4 as a "recommended" model, even though its score in our other tests placed it atop the latest Ratings of smart phones that were released today.

<span style=";font-family:";" >The iPhone scored high, in part because it sports the sharpest display and best video camera we've seen on any phone, and even outshines its high-scoring predecessors with improved battery life and such new features as a front-facing camera for video chats and a built-in gyroscope that turns the phone into a super-responsive game controller. But Apple needs to come up with a permanent—and free—fix for the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone 4.

<span style=";font-family:";" >If you want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix, we continue to recommend an older model, the 3G S.

<span style=";font-family:";" >Copyright © 2006-2010 Consumers Union of U.S., Inc. Iniesta fired home the winner when he was put through in the area by Cesc Fabregas. Keeper Maarten Stekelenburg dived to his right and got a hand to the ball he could not keep it out.
The defeat was heartbreaking for the Dutch, who were down to 10 men after John Heitinga was sent off in extra time. It was their third World Cup final loss after 1974 and 1978.
European champions Spain had looked the more assured early on in the clash at Soccer City as a nervous-looking Dutch side ceded territory to their slick opponents.

Stekelenburg was forced into a save after five minutes when Sergio Ramos headed a Xavi cross goalwards while Spain forward David Villa crashed a volley into the side netting with the goal looming.

But a series of freekicks and bookings, including two strong challenges by Dutch midfielders Nigel de Jong and Mark van Bommel, shook Spain out of their rhythm and stopped them from producing the swift-passing game that got them to the final.

Netherlands offered little in attack and the nearest they came to a first-half goal was a bizarre incident when Gregory van der Wiel attempted to give the ball back in an act of sportsmanship.

The fullback's 60-metre punt bounced up and over Spain captain Iker Casillas, forcing the startled keeper to leap and tip it to safety.

The game continued with frequent stoppages and few chances, until Wesley Sneijder split the Spanish defence with a perfectly-weighted ball into the path of Arjen Robben after 62 minutes only for Casillas to save brilliantly with his feet.

In a lively end to normal time Villa had a shot blocked in front of the line, an unmarked Ramos headed wildly over the bar from five metres out and Puyol was lucky to escape punishment after hauling down a furious Robben.

In extra time it was Stekelenburg's turn to save with his feet when substitute Fabregas was sent clear by Iniesta.

Netherlands had to play with 10 men for the last 10 minutes of extra time when John Heitinga was sent off for hauling down Iniesta on the edge of the box.

The little midfielder got back on his feet and soon after was celebrating scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final to send the delighted Spanish fans into raptures. The festival has close semblance to the Thai New year, Bengali New Year, and Sankranthi festival in India.

Cultural anthropological history of the 'Traditional New Year' which is celebrated on month of April, goes back to an ancient period in Sri Lankan history. Various beliefs, perhaps those associated with fertility of the harvest, gave birth to many rituals, customs, and ceremonies connected with the New Year. The advent of Buddhism in the third century BC (300BC) led to a re-interpretation of the existing New Year activities in the Buddhistic light. The majority of the people in the country are Buddhists, and as such, it is that the Buddhist outlook was predominant in transforming the New Year rites to what they are now.

Hinduism, on the other hand, existed side by side with Buddhism, in medieval times. New Year practices interpreted in the Hinduistic way developed among the Hindus. Buddhism and Hinduism were historically connected with each other. Their philosophies were running along parallel dimensions, except for certain ultimate truths concerning the self, the way to achieve emancipation and the nature of a creative god and nirvana (which Buddhism denies). There was no serious contradiction in New Year rituals that are found among the Buddhists and Hindus.

The mythological backdrop of the New Year is probably based on Hindu literature. The Prince of Peace called Indradeva descends upon the earth to ensure peace and happiness. He comes in a white carriage wearing on his head a white floral crown seven cubits high. He first dips, like a returning space capsule plunges, breaking earth's gravity, into a `kiri Sayura' or sea of milk

Modern day activities related to the celebration of the traditional New Year is based on auspicious times given by the astrologers. The New Year celebration is therefore can be thought as a complex mix of Indigenous, Astrological, Hindu, and Buddhist traditions

Celebrations

In month of April in Gregorian calendar (or in the month of ‘BAK’ according to the Buddhist calendar ), when the sun moves (in an astrological sense) from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) in the celestial sphere; Sri Lankans begin celebrating their New Year or Aluth Avurudhu (in Sinhala) and Puththandu (in Tamil). It marks the end of the harvest season and also coincides with one of two instances when the sun is directly above Sri Lanka.

However, unlike the celebration of the new Gregorian calendar year at midnight on December 31, the Sri Lankan traditional New Year begins at a time determined by astrological calculations. Also unlike 31st night celebrations, where old year ends at midnight and new year begins immediately afterwards; the ending of the old year, and the beginning of the new year occur several hours apart from one another (this span of time is determined by astrology as well). This period is, referred to as the nonagathe (or the 'neutral period'). During this time Sri Lankans are, according to tradition, encouraged to refrain from material pursuits, and engage solely in either religious activities or traditional games.

Cultural rituals begin shortly after the beginning of the new year with the cleaning of the house and lighting of an oil lamp. In some communities, women congregate to play upon on the Raban (type of a drum) to announce the incipient change in the year. Families carry out variety of rituals timing of which are determined by astrological calculations - from lighting the fire to making the Kiribath (milk rice) to entering into the first business transaction and eating the first morsels. The rituals vary slightly based on the locale. However the core of the celebrations remains the same.

The approach of the each auspicious time for various rituvals is heralded by the unmistakable sign of very loud firecrackers. Although loud firecrackers are an environmental concern, and a safety hazard, especially for children, this remains an integral part of the celebrations throughout Sri Lanka.

Once the important rituals are done, the partying begins as families mingle in the streets, homes are thrown open and children are let out to play. The ubiquitous plantain is dished out alongside celebratory feasts of Kaum (small oil cake) and Kokis (crisp and light sweetmeat, originally from the Netherlands). However, the extent of outdoor activities depends largely on the neighborhood. The suburban communities tend to have such social gatherings than urban or city dwellers.

Aluth Aurudu is an important national holiday for both the cultures of the Sinhalese Buddhists and the Tamil, Hindu Sri Lankans. The celebrations are given wide coverage and patronage from state owned media as well as private media. Although it is being promoted as a national or cultural event, due to the fact that it is based on astrology, the communities that do not follow astrology tend to either totally refrain from celebrations, or do the minimum required to maintain the social connections with those who do celebrate.

Harvest Festival

The date upon which the Sri Lankan New Year occurred, while determined by astrological calculations, also tends to coincide with one of the paddy harvest seasons. For farming communities, the traditional new year is a festival of harvest as well.

Cuckoo bird

Type of cuckoo bird, the Asian Koel has an strong association with the new year celebrations in traditional literature around the festival. The mating season of the bird roughly coincides with the festival season. The mating call of the male is regarded as a hearlding sign of the traditional new year. This bird is known as the koha in Sri Lanka by the Sinhala speaking community. The melodious call koo-ooo of the male bird is heard throughout Sri Lanka, during the breeding season of the bird, that roughly spans from March to August.
Sajith It functions as a camera phone (also including text messaging and visual voicemail), a portable media player (equivalent to a video iPod), and an Internet client (with e-mail, web browsing, and Wi-Fi connectivity). The user interface is built around the device's multi-touch screen, including a virtual keyboard in lieu of a physical keyboard. Third-party applications are available from the App Store, which launched in mid-2008 and now has well over 100,000 "apps" approved by Apple, with functionalities ranging from games to reference to productivity.Apple announced the iPhone on January 9, 2007,after months of rumors and speculation. The original (labeled retroactively) iPhone was introduced in the United States on June 29, 2007 before being marketed in Europe. It featured quad-band GSM with EDGE. Time magazine named it the Invention of the Year in 2007.Released July 11, 2008, the iPhone 3G supports faster 3G data speeds via UMTS with 3.6 Mbps HSDPA, and assisted GPS. Apple released version 3.0 of the iPhone OS for the iPhone (and iPod Touch) on June 17, 2009.The iPhone 3GS has improved performance, a camera with higher resolution and video capability, voice control, and support for 7.2 Mbps HSDPA downloading (but remains limited to 384 Kbps uploading as Apple has not implemented the HSPA protocol) It was released in the U.S., Canada and six European countries on June 19, 2009,in Australia and Japan on June 26,and internationally in July and August 2009. The original iPhone was discontinued with the introduction of the iPhone 3G, which remains available alongside the iPhone 3GS.
Sajith Vimukthihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12801458184944624605noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7866630011569876890.post-21611249208796420522010-03-22T22:16:00.000-07:002010-03-25T04:00:59.540-07:00History and availabilityDevelopment of the iPhone began with Apple CEO Steve Jobs' direction that Apple engineers investigate touchscreens.Apple created the device during a secretive and unprecedented collaboration with AT&T Mobility—Cingular Wireless at the time—at an estimated development cost of US$150 million over thirty months. Apple rejected the "design by committee" approach that had yielded the Motorola ROKR E1, a largely unsuccessful collaboration with Motorola. Instead, Cingular gave Apple the liberty to develop the iPhone's hardware and software in-house.
Jobs unveiled the iPhone to the public on January 9, 2007 in a keynote address. Apple was required to file for operating permits with the FCC, but since such filings are made available to the public, the announcement came months before the iPhone had received approval. The iPhone went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007, at 6:00 pm local time, while hundreds of customers lined up outside the stores nationwide. The original iPhone was made available in the UK, France, and Germany in November 2007, and Ireland and Austria in the spring of 2008.

On July 11, 2008, Apple released the iPhone 3G in twenty-two countries, including the original six.Apple has since released the iPhone 3G in upwards of eighty countries and territories.Apple announced the iPhone 3GS on June 8, 2009, along with plans to release it later in June, July, and August, starting with the U.S., Canada and major European countries on June 19. Many would-be users have objected to the iPhone's cost, and 40% of users have household incomes over 100,000 USD. In an attempt to gain a wider market, Apple has retained the 8 GB iPhone 3G at a lower price point. This is the latest of several price reductions since the iPhone's release in 2007; it now sells for one-sixth of the price of the original 8 GB iPhone when it first became available. In the U.S., it now costs $99, down from $599, although it requires a two-year contract and a SIM lock.
Apple sold 6.1 million original iPhone units over five quarters. The company sold 3.8 million iPhone 3G units in the second quarter of fiscal 2009, ending March 2009, and 12.6 million 3G and 3GS combined, totaling 33.75 million iPhones sold to date (Q4 2009). Sales in Q4 2008 surpassed temporarily those of RIM's BlackBerry sales of 5.2 million units, which made Apple briefly the third largest mobile phone manufacturer by revenue, after Nokia and Samsung. Approximately 6.4 million iPhones are active in the U.S. alone. While iPhone sales constitute a significant portion of Apple's revenue, some of this income is deferred.
The iPhone has garnered positive reviews from critics like David Pogue and Walter Mossberg.
